A desire for quiet and cohesiveness lay at the heart of this project, in a typical Victorian terrace. Using a predominantly neutral colour scheme, the house was redecorated and reinvented from top to bottom: carpets were replaced and original wooden floors sanded and refinished; panel radiators were replaced with traditional, column fittings; door hardware, light fittings, switches and sockets were all replaced; and an unloved understairs shower room was replaced by a simple cloakroom with adjacent, hardworking utility cupboard. The kitchen also underwent a complete transformation: existing laminate cupboards were hand-painted and the hardware replaced; a sleek ceramic sink and new brass fittings replaced tired stainless steel; while marble-effect worktops and tumbled-terracotta floor tiles created a much-needed sense of warmth and modernity.
